Designed to make film loading easier (and compete with Kodak’s recently launched Instamatic 126 film) the Agfa Rapid system used two identical cartridges. One of these acted as a take-up cartridge which meant after using the film there was no need to rewind it, and if the back of the camera was accidentally opened only the current exposure or two was lost since the exposed film was safely contained in the take-up cartridge.
When loading the film, the leader was guided by the camera into the take-up cartridge. A metal tab on the back of the film cartridge helped the camera identify the speed of the film.
Although the film leader was a slightly different shape, the film was 35 mm film with the same sprocket holes, and this can be used in the Rapid cartridges (up to about 14 exposures).
It was not as successful as the rival 126 film system, but a few other camera manufacturers did produce Rapid cameras. Agfa itself began selling 126 film by 1967 and stopped selling Rapid cameras by 1971 although film was available for few years after that.
